Empowering Children to Be Joyful
and Proficient Readers
Dedicated and Caring Educator, Literacy Coach and Tutor in Santa Barbara
Meet Nancy Myers
My Philosophy
My educational philosophy emanates from a deep respect for the potential of each child that I support! Over my years of teaching I have found the importance of developing a positive relationship with each child where they experience trust, support and positive challenge. It is the place where children can open up and bloom academically and personally. Also, I cultivate deep relationships with parents because I realize the importance of our partnership in supporting the literacy growth and success of their child.
My deep understanding that learning to read is a challenging tasks and that it can be difficult for many students sets the stage for a systematic and strategic approach to teaching reading. It involves targeted entry, formative and summative assessments. The results of these assessment help target a child’s skills level and then supports my teaching so each child experiences success! Carefully using assessment results in phonological awareness, phonics, irregular words, fluency and comprehension skills I am able to specifically target the “just right” places to support children and accelerate their literacy growth. The one-on-one nature of my teaching provides each child with maximum support and the highest quality of instruction.
My Approach
My approach to teaching relies on building a foundation of trust and respect for each child. Each session includes a time to welcome the child and recognize them. We continue with a time to review and listen to readings where they have recently learned new skills and strategies. Then I will strategically teach new concepts that match the student’s skills and provide opportunities to practice and refine them. From each session there is a step by step journey to higher level skills and mastery.

I provide developmentally appropriate assessments so that I can provide instruction and reading materials to match your child’s level so that we can accelerate their literacy instruction. I do these assessments before instruction and after instruction to ensure that each child has success in their learning
I carefully assess each child and build instruction that will provide successful learning experiences. With success each child builds self-esteem and confidence in learning. Often, children have not received the individual support and instruction that they need to be successful readers.
My sensitive and targeted approach respects each child and their unique learning needs. I work to provide targeted instruction where where a child sees their own progress and develops strategies and skills sequentially so that they can be a successful reader. Assessments help me target areas of strengths and area of need so that I can build instruction with just the right level of challenge so that each child can accelerate their learning. Also, with this step by step approach each child can develop their reading “toolkit” so that they can use their problem solving skills to solve a variety of reading challenges.
Having been a parent of three children, an elementary teacher at a variety of grade levels, a reading specialists at elementary schools, being a University clinical professor in the area of reading and having a reading private practice has helped me develop myself to be a teacher who cares deeply that all children become proficient readers and feel confident in their ability to read and write.
Absolutely! In my years of experience I have found that one-on-one reading support during the summer can help a child make dramatic gains in their reading skills. Many students who have not mastered their reading will lose valuable reading skills and strategies that they learned during the school year. Summer reading sessions stop this “summer slump” and support the accelerate reading growth and proficiency. Most importantly it boosts a child’s sense of confidence when they receive customized instruction and grow in their reading and writing skills during the summer!
Assessments: $150 per full assessment. This includes a meeting with the parents to review the support plan for the child, based on the strengths and weakness observed during the assessment process. Parents will also get a copy of the assessment report which include specific recommendations and educational strategies.
